New Rules And Procedures For Migrating To The ATSC System

Television as we have known it for over a half-century is about to be turned on its head! The arrival of a new digital telecasting standard, Advanced T.V. Systems Committee or ATSC, will radically change coverage prediction methods for Canadian television services, requiring a comprehensive review of existing rules, techniques, and procedures. This article discusses the new coverage prediction methodology for ATSC digital television services. A hypothetical case study involving the replacement of a National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) station with a similar-coverage ATSC one will be used to illustrate the differences between the prediction methodologies.

Encoding And Video File Transfer Made Easy

The Encoding and Transfer Manager (ETM) utility is a quick, simple solution for technicians and journalists in remote areas looking to improve on-air video quality and file reports more easily. This article will start by examining problems with transferring files via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). It will then look at the reasons for choosing a particular video codec, describe the various transfer methods supported by the utility, and review the programming techniques used to create it. Finally, it will discuss ETM’s upgradeability to match advances in technology.

Networking Quality Of Service (QoS)

In this article, the author reviews Quality of Service (QoS) concepts, along with the steps required to implement it on computer and other packet-switched networks. The topics covered include classifying traffic, defining boundaries, establishing tagging policies, and mapping queues. Throughout the article, a parallel is made with the CBC/Radio-Canada situation, where the growing bandwidth requirements of corporate applications are making QoS a critical issue.

Optimized Workflow For Olympic Sports Production – Integration Of AVID And EVS Servers For The Beijing Olympics Enable More Efficient Sports Reporting And Enhanced Programming

During the August 2008 Beijing Olympics, programs were produced out of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Toronto and Montreal production centres. This high-definition production required over 30 feeds from the Beijing International Broadcast Centre to be transmitted back to Canada via MTA global fibre-optic networks. In Toronto and Montreal, these signals were used for live programming and were recorded onto multiple EVS servers to create quick-turnaround sports segments using EVS editing software. At the same time, an AVID operator went through the EVS server, extracted sequence highlights, then transferred the resulting files to an AVID ISIS server for more elaborate editing.

This article describes the entire process flow, explaining why the Corporation chose this configuration, as well as the benefits and drawbacks to using two distinct editing platforms optimized for each type of program.

Voice Over Internet Protocol – Design Criteria For Converged Networks

The voice telephony industry has witnessed major changes in recent years, thanks to the introduction of Internet Protocol (IP) technology. Voice over IP (VoIP) now offers a viable alternative to traditional enterprise telephony systems. Using a convergent network infrastructure for VoIP and data helps reduce operating costs.

However, this solution requires some method of prioritizing bandwidth for telephony traffic, hence the concepts of Class of Service (CoS) and Quality of Service (QoS). This article discusses how these concepts are applied to local and wide-area networks.
